Morgan State Repeats as MEAC Overall Champions < All News
Tuesday, March 11, 2014

NORFOLK, Va. – Morgan State repeated as the overall champions during Sunday’s 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Cheerleading Championship at Echols Hall at Norfolk State University.

“The competition was very entertaining,” Morgan State head coach Theresa Gibson said. “Everybody brought their A game and you could see the talent on all teams.”

Florida A&M finished second overall, with South Carolina State placing third.

The 2014 MEAC Cheerleading Championship was held on Super Sunday at Echols Hall, the tip-off event for the annual MEAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament. Seven teams from the conference competed in the Championship and three performed exhibition routines. The evening was also highlighted by performances from four area Hampton Roads high school teams.

The South Carolina State Bulldog was crowned the champion of the MEAC Mascot of the Year Award presented by Clear Channel.

The championship had a new mascot challenge, which saw South Carolina State’s Bulldog win the inaugural championship.

“I really enjoyed the entire competition,” South Carolina State head coach George Brison said. “I feel that every team worked hard today."

“I think that giving starts at home and when I say home, I mean our communities so I think it’s good to see these young girls cheering and aspiring to be a MEAC cheerleader someday,” Gibson said.

Florida A&M’s Shelinka Cunningham won the All-Stars Division. Che’yona Henderson of Morgan State placed second, followed by Hayley Myles of Hampton.

In the Co-Ed Division, South Carolina State placed first as Bethune-Cookman earned second place and Savannah State finished third.

The 2014 MEAC Basketball Tournament begins Monday, March 10 with the first-round games as No. 4 Florida A&M Lady Rattlers take on No. 13 Delaware State Lady Hornets at 11 a.m. at the Norfolk Scope Arena.
