NORFOLK, Va. — In a bid for the semifinals, the No. 4-seeded Lady Eagles of Coppin State built a first-half lead, then held off the No. 5 Lady Bears of Morgan State in a 63-53 victory. The Lady Eagles advanced to their second semifinal appearance in three years.
Coppin State outshot their Baltimore rivals 38.6 to 29.7 percent, and outrebounded Morgan State 46-38.
Coppin’s Janelle Lane shot 6-of-9 from the floor to lead all scorers with 20 points. Amber Griffin, Keena Samuels and Jordan Swails all reached double figures with 11 points each, while Genesis Lucas led the Lady Eagles in rebounds and assists with seven and six, respectively.
Braennan Farrar led the charge for the Lady Bears with 12 points, five rebounds, and six assists. Zuri White added 11 points and led her team in rebounds with seven while Danielle Robinson chipped in nine points.
The Lady Eagles built their lead in the second quarter by outscoring the Lady Bears 17-10.
Down by 10 at the half, Morgan State closed the gap with 20 points in the third quarter and continued to close the margin. However, MSU could not get any closer than four points down the stretch.
Coppin State advances to play No. 9 South Carolina State on Friday at noon.
