NORFOLK, Va.—The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), partnered with Achieve3000 and Norfolk Public Schools, celebrated the Academy of International Studies Middle School, who were the winners of this year's Read with the MEac competition.
Read with MEac through Achieve3000 is a citywide reading contest that encourages young students in Norfolk Public Schools to read as much as possible and accumulate comprehension points on the Achieve3000 computer program during a six-week period in December and January.
The program, now in its eighth year, was created by the MEAC's Senior Women Administrators (SWA) to promote the love of reading.
“Read with MEac is a wonderful program that embodies the message of all 13 of our member institutions in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference,” said Savannah State SWA Danita Townsend. “Our student-athletes are students first, and reading is fundamentals. Together we encourage students to read and stay in school.”
This year's program focused on elementary and middle schools in the Norfolk Public School system. Academy of International Studies Middle School had the highest activity participation during the contest.
“I'm really excited for my students,” said Academy of International Studies Middle School principal Lynnell Gibson. “They're readers, they’re learners and it’s great to have them be recognized for doing something like this. It’s good to have the MEAC celebrating with us. It’s also good to have the MEAC celebrate reading.”
As the first place school, they received a check for $2,000 and a party at their school. Student-athletes, cheerleaders and mascots from MEAC institutions helped celebrate the middle school students.
“It’s always important to show kids how important reading is,” said Emmanuel Brice, Hampton track and field team captain. “As a student-athlete, this just reminds me of how important academics are.”
The top-ten male and top-ten female winners of this year’s competition will be recognized during the halftime of the Education Night game at the 2016 MEAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament, Wednesday, March 9.
