For the second straight year the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) will host the Read with the MEac community reading program geared for fifth graders in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System (WSFCS).

“The Read with the MEac reading program has had tremendous success in its first year and we are elated to continue this community service initiative,” said MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas. “We take pride in being a part of enhancing the education of our youth and look forward to further engaging students and encouraging them to read.”

The Read with the MEac program encourages fifth graders to read non-exclusive books, while keeping track, from Jan. 11 – Feb. 12. The program was organized by the conference’s Senior Woman’s Administrators (SWA) and is aimed at encouraging education and promoting the love of reading to students.

Students participating in the program will receive a bookmark and a ticket voucher to the 2010 MEAC Basketball Tournament, March 8-13, at the Joel Coliseum.

The school’s fifth grade class that reads the most books will earn a special appearance from representatives of the men’s and women’s basketball teams of the MEAC’s 12 member institutions. The top eight readers at the winning school will be invited to serve as ball boys/girls during the tournament. The winners will be recognized during the game along with the school’s principal, teachers and representatives from the WSFCS.

Additionally, the MEAC’s Student Athletes Advisory Committee (SAAC) will provide a donation to the media center of the winning school

The winning school will be announced on Feb. 22.
