"A Mirror into the FAMU Community and Beyond"
Miss Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University 2009-2010
Miss Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University is not only about wearing a crown, and having a pretty face, it’s about being a positive role model for others. Growing up in an urban neighborhood, I never imagined I would be where I am today. Most people in my neighorbood never made it to college, much less out of high school. Being the first person in my family to attend an institution of higher learning, puts more value on my title then most people will ever care to know. I want to be a beacon of hope for high school students who grew up in similar situations.
Miss FAMU is not your average black college queen. The prestigious title I proudly wear, is over 100 years old. As the face of FAMU, I have taken it to new heights as an essential recruitment tool for my illustrious University. I have meticulously been working to increase recruitment, boost retention, and serve the community. I cherish my beloved Florida A&M University with all my heart and will continue to preserve its rich legacy of Excellence with Caring.
Before my reign, I was active in many service projects and organizations. I have been dedicated to providing supreme service to all mankind. While remaining active in extracurricular activities, exemplary scholarship has remained my biggest priority. I am on the Dean’s List with a 3.2 GPA. As the membership chair of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People and the Program Action Activities Council, I have learned what it takes to be a leader. Its more than just being able to lead, but also how to take direction. My active involvement in Relay for Life, Presidential Ambassadors, SISTUHS INC, and the Rattler Booster’s Hospitality has taught me how to multitask and cultivate valuable relationships. Presently, I mentor and tutor for the HBCU AmeriCorps program. AmeriCorps focuses on uplifting struggling college and high school students.
I have been working diligently to ensure that my platform is fulfilled. I started the Fall 2009 semester, with an explosive start. I awarded one student with a full housing scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic school year worth $3,000. The winner demonstrated a financial need and essay. I donated over 60 toys to New Orleans residents for the Hurricane for Katrina Movement. During the spring semester, I look forward to awarding five book scholarships to students, and donating toiletries to abused women in shelters.
As my reign of Miss Florida A&M University 2009-2010 comes to a close I look forward to continuing my service to the community through alternate outlets. For the next two years I have committed myself to Teach For America Incorporated, a movement to eliminate educational inequity. I will teach in impoverished communities in South Florida, and give my students a positive image of what they can become. Whether I am near or far, I will serve FAMU today, tomorrow and forever.
